WHO WE ARE

Our Profession of Faith

Sigma Alpha Omega and its National Organization was founded and shall always work to further the teachings and principles of the Christian religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and faith in the one God who is an indivisible Holy Trinity comprised of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Membership in Sigma Alpha Omega and its National Organization is offered by invitation only to eligible persons who profess such faith for so long as they continue to profess it and otherwise comply with the membership requirements of Sigma Alpha Omega and its National Organization.

National Statement on Racial Inclusion

We believe that all humans have been created in the image of God (Gen 1:27) and are loved equally by Him as His children (Acts 17:26, 29). We believe that all those who have acknowledged Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord have been adopted into the family of Christ, where there is no hierarchy, as all are equal under Christ (Gal 2:28-29). We recognize that when these truths are not lived out in our communities and society that people groups suffer the effects of hate often in the form of racism and xenophobia.

Therefore, we acknowledge and grieve the systemic racial injustice that has been inflicted on people of color, especially Black people, historically and presently in our nation. We understand that silence strengthens racism and violence, and we wish to unequivocally voice that racial disparity is not ordained by the goodness of God but as a result of the sinfulness of mankind. We believe that Jesus welcomes all to Him and that we are to work both collectively as the Church and as individual believers to do the same without exception (Romans 15:7). We, as a sisterhood, aim to be a community that reflects the true diversity of the Church and to be a continual safe place for our sisters of color.

SAO and the National Board of Trustees

As the sorority grew, a need arose to connect chapters through a national organization. Active sisters of the Alpha Chapter at North Carolina State University labored for three years to prepare documents to support a National Board of Trustees. During the spring of 2004, the Lord confirmed the timing of the establishment of the National Board when active and alumni members of the Alpha Chapter met to pray about the future of the sorority.

The first National Board of Trustees consisted of alumnae members from the Alpha chapter. They were Kristen Batten, Emily Britt, Emily Greene, Valerie Harris Smith, Beth Helms, Jerusha Monroe, Jody Moss Ransom, Josie Watson Thomas, and Lindsey Viens.

Tasha Smith, alumna of the Alpha chapter of Sigma Alpha Omega® and past National Board Trustee, designed our sorority shield in the summer of 2001.  It is symbolic of the Armor of God, based on the Scripture passage Ephesians 6:10-18, and also includes our Greek letters, slogan, and sorority symbols (lily and dove). It is also the image on our sister member pins.

Sigma Alpha Omega is a non-denominational,

Christian social sorority that

is first founded in Christ

and second founded in

sisterhood. We encourage

each other to grow in the

Lord and in the Word while

holding one another

accountable through our

friendships.

Our History

Together, we pursue the Biblical ideals of Christian leadership, sisterhood, spiritual development, campus leadership, good scholarship, fine standards, service, excellence, and love through life in Christ. We enjoy Christian fellowship through Bible studies, service projects, social activities, and more.

We are already sisters in Christ, so it feels natural for us to operate as a social sorority providing women a Christian focus in university

Greek Life.

Depending on the campus, Sigma Alpha Omega can be classified as a club or as a Greek Special Interest Group. Sigma Alpha Omega is not a part of Panhellenic or Inter-Fraternity Conferences or other National Councils.

Founding Sisters of Sigma Alpha Omega® at North Carolina State University are:

Michelle Myers (née Bull), Kathryn Meyer, Kimberly Pereira (née Rogers), and Josie Thomas (née Watson).

Sigma Alpha Omega® was formed as a Sister Sorority to Chi Alpha Omega fraternity. Chi Alpha Omega was founded as a co-ed Christian fraternity in the spring of 1987 at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. The purpose of Chi Alpha Omega was to assemble Christian students in a Christ-centered brotherhood in order to enjoy Christian fellowship, service, accountability, and social activities.

In January 1998, the active brothers (both males and females) of the Beta Chapter of Chi Alpha Omega  at North Carolina State University voted to form Sigma Alpha Omega® in hopes of benefiting both the fraternity and the sorority. Both groups committed to living according to the ideals of Christ and His Word, uplifting each other through fellowship and service, and bringing the love of Christ to North Carolina State University.

Sigma Alpha Omega® Christian Sorority, Inc. was officially recognized as a national non-profit organization under the laws of North Carolina in June 2004. Since the founding of the sorority, chapters of Sigma Alpha Omega® have been established at many colleges and universities across the nation.
